Portfolio Reviews
Having your work reviewed by professionals is always a scary but exciting experience. I had the privilege of having the choice of several professionals visiting my university to choose to do portfolio reviews with and I was able to speak with Thomas Duffield and Roz Doherty. Each review was 15 minutes long.
Thomas Duffield http://thomasduffield.com/ :
My review with Thomas Duffield started by explaining my project and allowing him to look through my dummy book in a PDF format due to unforeseen circumstances with printing. As this was my first portfolio review I realised that I should have taken more time beforehand to write a coherent artist statement that I could refer back to when talking about my project. The key points that I took from Duffield’s advice is as follows:
Think about how certain images fit in with others e.g. commercial style compared to lifestyle
Write out a coherent artist statement at the back of the photobook to provide context for the audience to then look through the images in sequence again
Remove certain images
Find a different way to give credit to poet (instagram @ looks unprofessional)

Try cutting the book to the minimum and then work from there
As the project is to be continued after graduation create one handmade book as this works best for the overall idea
Have a look at adding in some objects into the book instead of adding them as photographs
Artists to look at for inspiration- Nick Goring, Armani Willet (The Disappearance of Joseph Plummer), Virginie Rebetez
