Sam Brown: Studio Lighting
Sam Brown from REwork studio came into my university to give a workshop on studio lighting for commercial portrait photography. Using a backdrop and six lights he showed us his reccomendation of how to make a successful headshot that featured harsh lighting. Though the lighting wasn’t my preference it was interesting to see a different way of working, especially from someone within the industry. For my personal practice the lighting used would be too harsh as I prefer a softer light, however it did make me rethink some of my previous lighting and how i could have improved it by using a light meter as he did in his workshop to adjust the lights correctly in proportion to the aperture on the camera. Another tip that I can use in my practice is to try out a honeycomb grid light attachment, this allowed him to have a harsher light but keep it directed.
