A Visit to Textbook Studios: Exhibiton Committee

To sort out the catalog and the website for the final year exhibition, all of us from the committee headed down to Textbook Studios in Manchester to talk with Vicky about organising costs and design for the catalogue. Being able to talk with Vicky was very helpful in figuring out deadlines for the catalogues from now until we need them to arrive. A few key points that we figured out were:

  • Keep the cover plain but create a dust jacket that could fold out into a poster that would involve everyone’s work

  • Working on 68 pages- Uncoated, A5, 300gsm cover, 120gsm inside for £495

  • Use Terry Burton to generate QR codes

  • Start design on 3rd May to have plenty of time to finish and send for printing

  • Set a deadline for involvement

  • We have the final say- don’t allow for peers to give too many opinions on the final design

We were able to look through several book designs and understand the concept behind each one. This solidified the idea of a simple cover with a more complicated dust jacket- a collage of everyones work that would hopefully fold out into a poster. We talked about cost effective ways to get around this- possibly using the facilites at university somehow and then folding them to fit around the books ourselves.

The main thing I took from this visit was how nice it was to collab on a project together and how rewarding it will be when it’s completed. Seeing a studio space where like-minded people came together to create work was so nice to see and is something I’d love to be able to do in the future. As the clients are ourselves and our peers there is a greater responsibilty to make everyone happy and create something that is equal and we can all be proud of.
