Building a career in Photojournalism: Joanne Coates

Joanne Coates is a North Yorkshire based photographer. She has been commissioned for editorials for different publications such as the BBC and The Guardian. During her talk she described different projects that she led such as “Know Your Place”- a project based on representation of the working class in visual arts, with only 18.2% of people working in the visual arts being working class.

Photojournalism Tips when starting out:

  • Editorial and commercial prices differ, an establishment may not consider you professional if you quote the wrong price so research this beforehand

  • Pitch a concept with photographs to a newspaper and they will pay you a day rate

  • Get paid to do artist residencies- https://resartis.org/ : often have open calls to apply
