Using a half-frame Canon Film Camera: My Experience

I recently came to own a half-frame Canon film camera and as a photographer with very little film experience I thought this would be a great opportunity to try it out. This camera uses 35mm film which means it’s easy to acquire and to develop and the nice thing about half frame cameras is that it doubles the roll of film and automatically makes the photograph portrait. This was a useful experiment for me personally as it made me more aware of the technicalities of a camera and it’s relation to light. Compared to my DSLR this particular film camera is also small and light making it easier to travel with and take photographs on the go.

I love the effect of the half frame camera, it is an easy and effective way to create a diptych. Using this film camera makes me feel more connected to my family due to generations of my own family photographs being taken on this camera. I’m still learning when it comes to the focus and technical features of the camera but I love using it so far. The photograph above shows how nice the colours develop on this film as well and I intend to continue to use it in my practice.
